Police: Man, 29, arrested in NYC torching of homeless man

NEW YORK - Police have made an arrest in the torching of a homeless man outside a New York City church where he had gone to sleep for the night. Israel Torres of the Bronx is charged with attempted murder and assault. Police could not say early Monday whether the 29-year-old had an attorney. His home number was not listed. Police had called Friday's attack on 49-year-old Felix Najera (Na-HEY-ra) one of the most severe and senseless attacks on a homeless victim in recent memory. Najera slept outside Bethany Christian Church in upper Manhattan's East Harlem. He was recuperating at a hospital after suffering burns over 40 percent of his body. It was not immediately clear if police were still seeking more suspects.
