Least Walkable Cities: Nashville - #2

Ask any Homeless person in our area and they'd probably rank Nashville 1st instead of 2nd for "least walkable." Not only is the city hard to walk in, but many places one might think are walkable are actually private property with those terrible "on-file" trespassing orders. That means it's not posted on the property itself, so unsuspecting walkers don't even know they've passed into no-man's land until the cops are writing them the ticket. couple that with just two - 2 - public bathrooms in the downtown area and you begin to see why Nashville ranks as in the top two of least walkable cities in the nation. Sadly, recent gas goug....errr, fluctuations in oil prices have cause the bus service here to raise rates; an all day regular pass now costs a whopping $4.80, while eliminating 6 routes that are damned near impossible to travel without some sort of wheeled transportation. Interestingly however, when I went to the Walk Score website and typed in 615 Church St to set up a widget for this blog, it scored the area 98 out of 100 - a walker's paradise. City officials and local businesses ought to pay attention to that, since it's one of the reasons so many of Nashville's Homeless hang out at or near that particular address (it's the main public library). In any event, if you happen to be anywhere else besides Church and 4th, Nashville is not a city you want to spend a lot of time walking in if you have any choice at all.... Least Walkable Cities
Least Walkable Cities Treehugger | Kenny Luna | July 21, 2008 06:38 PM When Walk Score recently released their ranking of the ten most walkable U.S. cities there was no doubt that folks in places like San Francisco, Boston and New York City could look with satisfaction upon their city as a paradise for bipedalism. But when we took a look at the rankings it became clear that there was quite a spread between some of the most and least friendly areas for walking in which to live. In fact, it's not so improbable to imagine that some citizens of major U.S. cities often feel like the person pictured here when compared to their counterparts in those where walking is a way of life. But the question is, does your city makes the list of our least walkable U.S. cities? Following is the list, created by Walk Score, of the least walkable major cities in the U.S. Top 10 Least Walkable U.S. Cities: 1. Jacksonville 2. Nashville 3. Charlotte 4. Indianapolis 5. Oklahoma City 6. Memphis 7. Kansas City 8. Fort Worth 9. El Paso 10. Mesa
