Man accused of stealing fire truck
South Salt Lake, Utah, police arrested the unidentified man after he allegedly jumped onto a fire truck that had been parked at the scene of an assistance call, tried to drive it away and assaulted the firefighters who tried to stop him, The Salt Lake Tribune reported Tuesday.
Authorities say the homeless man said he wanted to go to Washington to see his mother for Christmas.
He allegedly hit one firefighter in the head, broke off a slat from a nearby fence and starting swinging before he was subdued. One firefighter received minor face lacerations in the fracas, the newspaper said.
The man was arrested on suspicion of stealing the $500,000 fire engine and for assault, police said.
