Many seniors not filing for tax rebate checks

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The Internal Revenue Service says it's taking steps to make it easier for retirees and disabled veterans to file for a tax rebate check.
About 123,000 of those individuals in Tennessee have not filed a tax return to receive 1 of the special payments. They are the result of a $150 billion economic stimulus package passed by Congress in February.
People who don't make enough to file a return are eligible for at least $300. Individuals who pay taxes get up to $600, working couples $1,200 and those with children an additional $300 per child.
Darrell Hillis, a certified public accountant in Nashville, says he believes many people haven't filed tax returns to get the checks because the process is confusing.
But IRS spokesman Dan Boone says the agency is working to make it easier to file for a check.
