Homeless man hit crossing I-80 STAFF REPORT • August 13, 2008A man who identified himself as Robert Mayfield was injured Tuesday trying to cross Interstate 80, the Nevada Highway Patrol reported.
An elderly homeless man was injured Tuesday trying to cross Interstate 80 near the Victorian Avenue interchange, the Nevada Highway Patrol reported. Advertisement A man who identified himself as Robert Mayfield tried to cross the interstate about 11:30 a.m., the NHP said. Trooper Chuck Allen said the man did not have any identification.The driver of a small passenger bus driving east tried to miss Mayfield but hit him with the right side mirror, the NHP said. Mayfield went down in the right eastbound travel lane and was almost hit by several other vehicles. Two motorists who avoided hitting him then collided with each other. The accident closed the far right travel lane of I-80 for an hour. Mayfield was treated at Renown Regional Medical Center for injuries that did not appear to be life threatening. The injuries include a broken leg and multiple scrapes and bruises. "It's fortunate he wasn't killed," Allen said. Anyone with knowledge of the accident or anyone who might know Mayfield's family can reach detectives at 687-0400.
