NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Tennessee's jobless rate reached its highest point since May 1987 when it hit 6.9% last month.

About 209,000 people were unemployed in Tennessee in July, according to the state Department of Labor and Workforce Development. That's nearly 12,000 more unemployed people than the previous month.

In the same month last year, Tennessee had a 4.6% unemployment rate. About 9,100 manufacturing jobs have been lost since last year, 5,100 professional and service jobs and 3,400 financial jobs.

Tennessee's unemployment remains well above the national rate of 5.7%.
