It's certainly wonderful that Channel 5 wants to assist the homeless by partnering with the Mission, lord knows they need the help.
But those of us who work with the homeless every day would also strongly encourage Channel 5 to spend some time examining why it is our city has such a difficult time in housing the 10,000+ homeless found wandering our streets.
An expose on the barriers and obstacles to housing, a story on the long wait times to access affordable housing, a in-depth report on the impact quality of life citations have on their ability to procure housing would all be great and interesting stories. Only when we begin addressing the root causes of homelessness will we be able to put and end to this scourge that killed 50 of our citizens last year alone.

Times are tough for us all, but think of the people that have no food or shelter. That's why NewsChannel 5 has partnered with the Nashville Rescue Mission for the Thanksgiving 2008 campaign, From Hunger to Hope.
The Nashville Rescue Mission seeks to help the hurting of Middle Tennessee by offering food, clothing and shelter to the homeless and recovery programs to those enslaved in life degrading problems.
In 2007, the Mission served a total of 548,338 meals and provided 232,786 nights of safe shelter. Of that, 111,984 nutritous meals and 61,375 nights of lodging were provided for women and children.
It only takes a $1.92 to provide a warm, nutrious meal, so let's come together as a community and feed Nashville's Homeless this Thanksgiving.
Give thanks for all the blessings in your life, and help someone less fortunate turn Hunger to Hope.
